Iteration 1: Ideation
Setting the tone

Given that the topic is on the end of the world, we needed to make sure we balanced the design and tone of the game to keep it fun and unserious but not too fun that it seems childish.
We ended up choosing an art style similar to Plants VS. Zombies.

Initial Player Concepts

The first iteration we focused on the vague concepts.
It was important that the characters were not insulting towards real doomsday preppers so we leaned into making them less realistic.
Initial Game Concepts

We started by brainstorming the basic structure and gameplay mechanics of the game. We used sketches, cards, and paper prototypes to test different ideas and see which mechanics were fun and understandable to our playtesters

Iteration 2: Refining
Event, Protagonist and Environment Cards

I am not trying to reinvent the wheel here having recognisable traits like green skin for zombies or the evil billionaire being in a suit and tie might not be the most creative solution but it improves recognisability.
You can see in this iteration there is no distinction between the different card types. This is something that came up in player testing and is fixed in the next iteration.

Iteration 3: Final Design

Player Character Designs

Player Boards: Front

The player screens were based on the concept of the DM screens from DnD. The game has elements of keeping your cards and what you think the doomsday event will be a secret, hence the closed screens to hide your items.
The game concept is based on doomsday preppers, so we decided the player boards should look like the inside of a garage where the players can upgrade their vehicle and look over their conspiracy board.
